McALLEN, Texas – Three Rio Grande Valley organizations will receive a combined $510,650 in state and federal funding intended to strengthen public transportation and improve access for seniors and people with disabilities.
U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez announced the funding Tuesday. The Texas Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration are providing the money.
South Padre Island will receive $289,000. The Valley Association for Independent Living will receive $181,650, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council will receive $40,000.
The awards may be used to support transit operations in rural communities and improve access for residents who rely on public transportation for work, school, medical appointments and other daily needs.
Gonzalez said transportation access should not depend on a person’s ZIP code and that the investment is intended to connect South Texans of all ages with jobs, education, health care and family.
