A mother’s request for a few neighbors to help her son celebrate his birthday with his favorite activity grew into a neighborhood-wide summer trick-or-treat event involving 83 homes.
Leah Farrow said her son, Soren, who has autism, loves Halloween and trick-or-treating. Because his birthday falls outside the traditional Halloween season, she asked neighbors whether they would be willing to let him visit their doors in costume and receive candy.
The response went far beyond the family’s initial expectations. Dozens of residents decorated, prepared treats and joined the celebration, turning an ordinary summer day into a familiar Halloween-style experience centered on the child.
The event also showed how a specific, practical request can make a community activity more accessible. Predictable routines and focused interests can be meaningful for some autistic children, but needs differ from person to person; the family’s account describes Soren’s experience and should not be generalized to everyone with autism.
Farrow said the participation left her surprised and grateful. The celebration was organized by the family and neighbors, not as a commercial event, and its success depended on residents volunteering their time and homes.
