SAN BENITO, Texas — The San Benito Greyhounds are entering the 2026 football season with an experienced roster and a goal of turning consecutive playoff appearances into a stronger overall finish.
San Benito finished 2-9 in each of the past two seasons. Those records, however, included 2-2 district marks that were enough to send the Greyhounds to the playoffs both years. Coaches and players say the returning experience gives the program an opportunity to take another step this fall.
Defensive coordinator William Huerta said players understand the expectations surrounding the program and have embraced a theme of restoring its traditional standard. Senior wide receiver Angel Garcia said the roster is stronger because many players who gained experience last season are returning.
Senior cornerback Peter Buenrostro also pointed to the value of a veteran group. Experienced players are expected to provide stability while helping younger teammates fill positions left open by graduation.
The challenge will be substantial in District 32-6A. San Benito shares the district with Brownsville Veterans Memorial, Harlingen, Los Fresnos, PSJA and PSJA North. The Greyhounds went 2-2 in district play during each of the previous two seasons but struggled during the non-district portion of their schedule.
San Benito will open non-district play against Edcouch-Elsa and Edinburg Vela. The Greyhounds will then face Laredo Alexander, Harlingen South and Odessa before an open week.
District competition begins against Brownsville Veterans Memorial. The remaining district schedule includes Los Fresnos, PSJA North, Harlingen in the Battle of the Arroyo and PSJA in the regular-season finale.
Players said their approach is centered on daily improvement rather than looking too far ahead. The returning roster gives San Benito a foundation, but the Greyhounds will have to translate that experience into more consistent results against a demanding schedule.
