South Padre Island Council Establishes Convention Center Priorities

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — South Padre Island officials have established project-management priorities for a proposed renovation and annex at the city’s Convention Center, focusing on expansion needs, financial oversight, environmental protection and long-term operating costs.

The City Council met with Broaddus & Associates during an Aug. 11 workshop to discuss responsibilities, project scope, milestones, budget controls, communications and potential risks. The city manager’s office was designated as the city’s primary point of contact, with changes requiring written authorization through the established process.

Three conceptual options were presented. One would expand the exhibit hall and storage areas. A second would add ballroom and meeting space, while a third would add more meeting rooms intended to bring the facility closer to industry guidelines for the relationship between exhibit and meeting capacity.

Mayor Patrick McNulty said additional exhibit space is needed because some organizations have outgrown the current facility. Council members also emphasized fiscal responsibility, transparency and designing infrastructure that could accommodate future phases without extensive demolition.

Officials identified youth sports tourism as another potential use, particularly during fall and winter. Convention Center staff also cited needs for additional storage, updated technology, fire-alarm improvements and greater emergency-generator capacity.

Tourism officials asked planners to integrate the project with the site’s existing outdoor attractions, including birding, windsurfing and public sunset views. Goals discussed during the workshop included energy efficiency, lower maintenance expenses and possible LEED certification.
