PORT ISABEL, Texas – The Port Isabel City Commission approved a resolution and the first reading of an ordinance designating two tracts known as Long Island Village as an industrial district, despite objections from some residents.
City officials said the designation does not itself create an industrial use at the property. Mayor Martin Hockema said the action is intended to allow the city to pursue tourism-related activities and negotiations involving the area.
Residents who opposed the measure raised concerns about property values and the potential impact of leaving the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction. The vote comes as the city remains involved in litigation connected to hotel occupancy taxes at the development, according to the report.
The resolution took effect immediately. A second reading of the ordinance was scheduled for the following commission meeting.
