A new reader-driven feature is prompting adults from several generations to reconsider beliefs they say were presented as unquestionable truths while they were growing up.
BuzzFeed collected 19 responses from adults of different ages who described ideas they now view as misleading, incomplete or harmful. The responses address personal expectations and the ways families, schools, workplaces and popular culture can shape attitudes.
One theme highlighted by the article is emotional availability within families. Some respondents said younger adults may be reacting to the limited emotional support they experienced from parents by taking a different approach with their own children.
The accounts are personal opinions, not the findings of a representative poll. They do not establish that every member of a generation shared the same experience or that a belief affected all families in the same way.
