Special to BTXSentinel.com – Students enrolled in the Training to Transitions Program within the Special Education Department at the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) had an opportunity to tour City Hall on Thursday as guests of District 2 City Commissioner Linda C. Macias.
“They contacted me and asked if we could do a tour. We worked on it, and I am happy they are here because they enjoy it,” Commissioner Macias said.
During the tour, students engaged with several department directors and city leaders, learning firsthand how different city departments operate and contribute to the Brownsville community. The visit provided valuable insights into local government functions and the services available to residents.
The Training to Transitions Program focuses on equipping students—many of whom have already graduated from high school—with essential job skills to help them gain real-world experience and successfully integrate into the workforce.
“Most of our students have already graduated from high school, and our program aims to teach them job skills so they can go out into the community and experience Brownsville,” said Clemente Torres, a representative of the Training to Transitions Program with the BISD Special Education Department.
The visit to City Hall is one of many initiatives designed to help students gain exposure to different career opportunities and community involvement, fostering their independence and professional growth.
