BMetro Adds New Bus Dispatch and Tracking System

Brownsville Metro is moving forward with a new dispatch and vehicle tracking system aimed at improving bus operations, communication, and safety across its fixed-route service.

The Brownsville City Commission approved a five-year contract with ETA Phi Systems, Inc. for the purchase and implementation of a Computer-Aided Dispatch and Automatic Vehicle Location system, commonly known as CAD/AVL.

“Our dispatch team gets alerted of any deviations, and we’re able to alert the driver, as well as the public,” said Simón Ortiz, B-Metro Transit Manager. “It’s very essential for us to have this tool and real-time access.”

As part of the upgrade, buses will also receive onboard tablets that will allow dispatchers to discreetly communicate route changes, safety concerns, and other important information directly to drivers.

The new technology will also help B-Metro measure the performance and reliability of its routes.

“It allows us to keep track of our buses as well as keep stats of on-time performance, so we can better measure our route and provide better service to the public,” Ortiz said.

The new CAD/AVL system will be implemented across B-Metro’s fixed-route bus operations.

BMetro has several safety measures already in place, including onboard cameras and a Passenger Safety Program that allows riders to call or text 956-953-4191 to report safety concerns.
