Brownsville Curbside Recycling Program Sees Strong Participation After Six Months

Brownsville’s curbside recycling program is seeing strong participation six months after its January launch, according to the City of Brownsville.

The city said Redfish Recycling reported that 72 percent of eligible households are actively participating in the residential recycling program. Rose Timmer, outreach coordinator for Redfish Recycling, said the program has shown residents were ready for curbside recycling.

City officials also said contamination remains a priority. Redfish Recycling reported a contamination rate of about 15 percent, meaning some carts include items that cannot be processed through the recycling system.

Residents are encouraged to keep nonrecyclable materials out of recycling carts so the program can continue operating efficiently and reduce waste sent to landfills.
