The City of Brownsville’s Parks and Recreation Department hosted a demolition event on Thursday at Gonzalez Park, marking the start of a project to replace the park’s old restrooms with modern, upgraded facilities.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Parks and Recreation Department and the Enterprise Project Management Office, with funding provided by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC). Noble Texas Builders is doing the work.
Gonzalez Park, a longtime landmark in the Southmost community, is set to benefit greatly from this investment.
“For decades, Gonzalez Park has served as a cornerstone for this community, and today’s event is an exciting moment—not just for Brownsville but for Southmost as a whole,” said District 1 Commissioner Bryan L. Martinez.
“A lot of our parks have had deferred maintenance for many years, and one of the most important assets for our larger parks is the restrooms,” said Deputy Chief and CFO Alan Guard. “These bathrooms have been inoperable for a long time, and it’s crucial that we develop strong partnerships, like the one we have with BCIC, to fund these quality-of-life projects. Replacing restrooms has been one of our top priorities.”
Ensuring accessibility to clean, well-maintained public restrooms is a key part of the City’s broader efforts to enhance quality of life in Brownsville’s parks.
“It’s a city initiative to improve all of our facilities, and that includes making sure we have public restrooms available to everyone,” said Parks Director Sean De Palma. “It’s important that we provide clean, functioning, and well-lit bathrooms that accommodate individuals and families.”
The restroom replacement project at Gonzalez Park is one of several planned upgrades that aim to revitalize public spaces and enhance the overall park experience for residents and visitors.
