In recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week (April 22–26, 2025), the City of Brownsville’s Department of Engineering and Public Works is partnering with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to remind motorists about the importance of staying alert and driving safely through road construction zones.
This year’s theme, part of TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign, emphasizes protecting roadside workers and preventing accidents by encouraging responsible driving behavior in active work zones.
Motorists are reminded that traffic fines double when workers are present in work zones. According to TxDOT, in 2023 alone, there were thousands of crashes in Texas work zones, many resulting in serious injury or death, often due to speeding, inattention, or following too closely.
To help reduce the risk, drivers are encouraged to follow these safety tips when driving through work zones:
- Slow Down: Obey posted speed limits. Work zones may include narrow lanes, abrupt lane shifts, or equipment on the roadway.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions—put away phones, skip the radio, and focus on the road ahead.
- Watch for Workers: Road crews often operate just feet from moving traffic. Follow flaggers and posted signage carefully.
- Don’t Tailgate: Leave extra space between vehicles. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of work zone crash.
- Plan Ahead: Check traffic updates and allow for delays. Giving yourself extra time reduces the temptation to speed.
The City of Brownsville encourages all residents to help keep construction crews and fellow drivers safe by making wise choices behind the wheel.
