The City of Brownsville is creating a new Parks, Health, and Recreation Master Plan and is asking residents to help shape the future of the city’s outdoor spaces and recreational services.

This 10-year strategic plan will guide the City in expanding parkland, improving health and wellness opportunities, upgrading facilities, enhancing recreational programming, and supporting environmental sustainability. It will also help the City secure funding for future projects, improve connectivity between spaces, and ensure everyone can access fun, healthy, and inclusive community activities.

The City will host a series of public meetings throughout April to gather community input. These meetings, open to all residents, will provide an opportunity to share ideas, concerns, and visions for Brownsville’s parks and recreational services.

The Parks, Health, and Recreation Master Plan will focus on several key areas, including:

  • Parkland expansion – Finding new land to create parks
  • Health – Creating parks and programs that help people live active, and healthy lives
  • Facility upgrades – Looking at current parks and suggesting improvements and new features
  • Recreational programming – Reviewing existing programs and adding new activities, classes, and events for people to enjoy
  • Connectivity across the city – Making it easier to get to parks by improving the sidewalks, trails, and roads, so everyone is within a 10-minute walk from the park
  • Environmental sustainability – Protecting nature and promoting eco-friendly practices in the parks, while offering activities that don’t harm the environment
  • Operations and maintenance – Checking staffing, budgets, and how well the parks and facilities are being maintained
