UT System Board of Regents Approves $42.3 Million for New UTRGV Therapy Facility in Harlingen

The University of Texas System Board of Regents has approved design development plans and a $42.3 million funding package for a new UTRGV physical and occupational therapy facility in Harlingen.

The project will renovate a former retail center at 2222 S. 77 Sunshine Strip into a 55,430-gross-square-foot multidisciplinary academic and research facility.

Funding includes $33.7 million from Permanent University Fund bond proceeds and $8.6 million from Revenue Financing System bond proceeds, which will be repaid through local designated funds.

UTRGV President Guy Bailey said the investment will expand student opportunity and help prepare more health professionals to serve communities across the Rio Grande Valley.

The facility will include wet and dry anatomy labs, musculoskeletal and neuro research spaces, motion capture, physiology and applied exercise research areas.

It also will include pediatric and adult activities of daily living spaces, simulation-based learning environments, an assistive technology lab with driving simulation, shared therapy gym space, flexible classrooms, graduate workrooms, lounges and study areas.

The design emphasizes shared community areas and multidisciplinary collaboration between physical therapy and occupational therapy programs.

The project is expected to be completed in spring 2027 and is part of UTRGV continued investment in healthcare education and Cameron County growth.
