EDINBURG, Texas — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley football team opened its second season with a 44-0 victory over UT Permian Basin on Saturday before a program-record crowd of 13,698 at Robert and Janet Vackar Stadium.
UTRGV scored 17 points in the first quarter, added six in the second, seven in the third and 14 in the fourth. The Vaqueros improved to 1-0 and extended their unbeaten run at their home stadium.
The defense recorded UTRGV’s third home shutout and its second consecutive season-opening shutout. The Vaqueros limited UT Permian Basin to 151 passing yards and 63 rushing yards.
Garret Rangel completed 12 of 16 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown. Kyran Lee had six receptions for 141 yards and a score, while Brennan Carroll led the rushing attack with 84 yards.
Brysen Gardner made three field goals and four extra points, accounting for 13 points. Tyler Thomas, Jordan Ford and Dorian Blackwell each recorded an interception.
UTRGV is scheduled to play its first Football Bowl Subdivision opponent Saturday, Sept. 5, against UTSA in San Antonio.
