Buena Vida redevelopment breaks ground, 212 affordable units coming

The City of Brownsville marked a significant milestone this week as officials, community leaders, and residents gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Buena Vida Redevelopment, a transformative public housing project hosted by the Housing Authority of the City of Brownsville (HACB).

Brownsville City Commissioner At-Large “B” Nurith Galonsky was among the featured speakers at the event held on Tuesday, highlighting the importance of affordable, quality housing in supporting families and strengthening neighborhoods.

“It’s a great day to be here, in the next chapter of this housing development,” Galonsky said. “With the start of this redevelopment, this strong sense of community will continue and multiply.”

“These projects are 10 years in the making. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and it’s important that we recognize all the work that they did to help us get here,” said Carla Mancha, CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of Brownsville.

The Buena Vida Redevelopment will breathe new life into the city’s first public housing site and serve as a cornerstone for revitalizing the surrounding area. The project includes three new communities, Hope Place, Miraflores, and Buena Vida, collectively offering 212 modern, affordable housing units.

The redevelopment is part of HACB’s long-term vision to expand access to Brownsville’s safe, sustainable, affordable housing options. The new units will feature updated infrastructure and community-focused amenities to improve residents’ quality of life.
