The steady pop of paddles and pickleballs has become a familiar soundtrack inside the Dome at Brownsville Sports Park, where players of all ages gather daily to enjoy one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports.
Combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, pickleball has quickly become a favorite activity for beginners and experienced players alike. Easy to learn and enjoyable for all skill levels, the sport continues to attract new participants throughout Brownsville.
For many players, what begins as a way to stay active soon turns into a regular part of their routine.
“I got interested in pickleball about four years ago in Houston,” said player Noah Perez. “I was there for law school looking for activities and things to do. I played with my dad, who also plays, and I fell in love with it ever since then.”
Beyond the physical benefits, players say the friendships formed on the court are what make the sport truly special.
Port Isabel resident Joyce Langford has been playing pickleball for 15 years after first discovering the sport while living in Minnesota. She says the sense of community is what keeps her coming back.
“We love pickleball because of the camaraderie,” Langford said. “You make friends all over the world. People are playing it everywhere. We travel, we take our paddles with us, but you can’t beat the exercise. How can you get exercise with a group of friends like this, sweat, and still have fun?”
The welcoming environment has played a major role in the sport’s continued growth, with experienced players regularly helping newcomers learn the rules and develop their skills.
“It’s amazing,” said Yessica Gutierrez, recreation and events coordinator for the City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department. “It brings everybody together.”
Residents can enjoy pickleball not only at Brownsville Sports Park but also at several other city parks, creating even more opportunities to stay active and connect with others.
At the Brownsville Sports Park Dome, court access is just $3 per person, and the Parks and Recreation Department provides paddles and pickleballs, making it easy for first-time players to give the sport a try.
Whether looking for exercise, friendly competition or a welcoming community, Brownsville’s growing pickleball scene is proving there’s always room for one more player.
