A New York hospital’s decision to eliminate 12 utilization-review nursing positions has renewed questions about human oversight, accountability and patient care as health systems adopt artificial-intelligence tools.
The Courier Journal opinion piece examines layoffs at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. The New York State Nurses Association says the nurses’ work is being shifted to AI-powered software from Datavant. The affected nurses reviewed patient records and communicated with insurers about whether treatment met coverage requirements.
Montefiore has disputed the union’s characterization of the changes, saying the claims are inaccurate and misleading and describing the technology as part of a nonclinical administrative process. The hospital has not publicly detailed how final reviews will be handled after the layoffs.
The dispute follows a 41-day nurses strike and a contract that the union says requires management to discuss artificial intelligence before it reduces union jobs. NYSNA argues that a licensed nurse should remain involved in final review decisions, while the hospital says technology can improve administrative workflows.
The controversy has implications beyond New York. Hospitals nationwide are testing AI for records review, documentation and insurance workflows, making questions about transparency, privacy, error correction and who is responsible for a denied service increasingly important to patients and health-care workers.
