BROWNSVILLE, Texas — U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright visited the Port of Brownsville on Tuesday to meet with local leaders and industry representatives as federal officials highlighted energy and infrastructure investment in the region.
Wright said the Trump administration had approved a federal loan of more than $3 billion intended to upgrade electrical infrastructure in the Brownsville area. He said the work is expected to improve reliability and help lower electricity costs.
The visit placed Brownsville’s port and expanding industrial base at the center of the administration’s discussion of domestic energy production, infrastructure and private investment. The Port of Brownsville supports energy, maritime, manufacturing and international trade activity across South Texas.
Vice President JD Vance had also been scheduled to participate in the South Texas visit but canceled because of a scheduling change.
Specific details about the federal loan, including the borrower, project schedule and infrastructure covered by the financing, were not immediately included in the published report.
