BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Brownsville Public Library is inviting community members to learn Coptic bookbinding, one of the world’s oldest bookbinding traditions, during two free Makerspace workshops.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of the historic technique while creating a hand-bound journal to take home. Coptic binding is recognized by its exposed stitching, which connects the pages and covers while allowing the finished book to open flat.
The first workshop is scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at the Southmost Branch, 4320 Southmost Blvd. A second session will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at the Main Branch, 2600 Central Blvd.
All materials will be provided at no charge. Because participants will use sharp tools, the library requires adult supervision for minors.
