SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – South Padre Island residents and tourism stakeholders will have an opportunity Tuesday to comment on plans for a potential expansion of the city’s convention center.
The city will hold a community workshop at 1 p.m. Aug. 11 at City Hall. Officials are expected to present information about the project and collect feedback from residents and other interested parties.
The convention center opened in 1992. City leaders have been studying whether to expand or replace portions of the facility so South Padre Island can compete for larger conventions, meetings and sporting events, particularly during slower tourism periods.
The city began evaluating several options after receiving a convention and hotel market study from Chicago-based Hunden Partners. The workshop is part of the continuing planning process and does not represent final approval of a construction plan.
