SpaceX Receives Approval for 33.9-Acre Industrial Site Near Boca Chica

STARBASE, Texas – Space Exploration Technologies Corp. has received approval for a 33.9-acre heavy industrial development along Boca Chica Highway, according to records obtained through a Public Information Act request.

The property is on the south side of Starbase, closer to the Rio Grande. A zoning map reviewed by the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal shows the SpaceX-owned land was changed from mixed-use to heavy industrial.

The available records raise questions about how notice of the zoning action was provided. A city letter says nearby property owners were notified of a May 28 public hearing, but the report found no matching notice in the state’s public-notice search system or Cameron County newspapers. Records from the meeting also did not identify or discuss the SpaceX rezoning, according to the publication.

The approval could allow SpaceX to expand industrial operations beyond its existing Starbase campus. The company’s detailed construction plans and timetable for the site were not disclosed in the available records.
