BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The City of Brownsville is reactivating its Environmental and Conservation Task Force to examine how future data center development could affect community resources, infrastructure, neighborhoods and the local economy.
The Brownsville City Commission approved Resolution No. 2026-121-A, directing the task force to review city policies and development regulations involving data centers and make recommendations to the commission.
The task force may have up to 11 members: seven voting community representatives and four nonvoting members representing the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, technology or data center expertise, public health and infrastructure.
Its review will consider electricity demand and energy reliability, water demand, land use and siting, noise, lighting, neighborhood impacts, infrastructure, economic development opportunities and fiscal considerations.
The task force is directed to use clearly defined data, publicly present its findings and offer residents and stakeholders opportunities to participate as recommendations are developed. A final report is due to the City Commission by Dec. 15, 2026, unless the timeline is extended.
