Brownsville maintains six access points for pediatric emergency care

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — The City of Brownsville said pediatric emergency care remains available locally despite changes to inpatient pediatric services at Valley Regional Medical Center and Valley Baptist Medical Center Brownsville.

Brownsville has six locations where children can receive emergency medical evaluation and treatment or urgent medical care. The facilities include hospital emergency departments, freestanding emergency centers and an urgent care clinic.

Emergency care and inpatient services

Valley Baptist Medical Center Brownsville will soon end pediatric inpatient care services, and Valley Regional Medical Center no longer offers pediatric inpatient care. Both hospitals and their emergency and urgent care centers continue to offer medical care for children through their emergency departments and centers. The changes affect inpatient hospitalization services, not the availability of emergency care.

Children requiring hospitalization, specialized pediatric treatment or extended medical care beyond the emergency room will be transferred to an appropriate medical facility, including Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen or Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg. Transfer decisions are based on a patient’s medical needs, the level of care required and the services available at the treating facility.

Potential expansion

Additional pediatric healthcare services may become available locally as Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley works to expand its presence in the Brownsville market. The planned expansion would build on Driscoll’s regional pediatric healthcare network and could provide Brownsville families greater access to specialized pediatric services closer to home.

The city said it will continue coordinating with regional healthcare partners to share information about available services and future developments. Families should seek care at an appropriate emergency department for serious medical conditions and call 911 in life-threatening emergencies.
