The Brownsville Public Library System is inviting readers of all ages to embark on a journey of imagination, learning, and fun as it launches its 2025 Summer Reading Program this June. The annual initiative encourages children, teens, and adults to stay engaged with reading and enrichment activities during the summer break.

Open to residents citywide, the program will run through the summer months and feature a dynamic lineup of reading challenges, live events, workshops, and prizes aimed at fostering a love for books and boosting literacy across all age groups.

“This is more than just reading—it’s about building a lifelong habit and turning summer into a season of discovery,” said a library spokesperson. “We’re excited to offer something for everyone, whether it’s storytime for toddlers or author talks for adults.”

Participants will receive reading logs and activity passports, with incentives given for reaching milestones. The library will also host special events and performances throughout the season—many of which are free to attend.

This year’s theme, which will be announced during the kickoff week, aims to connect reading with real-world exploration and creative expression. In past years, themes have included space exploration, adventure, and environmental awareness.

“We want to encourage kids to keep reading during the summer months so they return to school ready to succeed,” the spokesperson added. “But just as importantly, we want them to have fun doing it.”

The Summer Reading Program is supported by local sponsors, educational partners, and volunteers. It is a cornerstone of the library’s mission to serve as a center for learning, community engagement, and cultural enrichment.

Registration opens in early June and is free for all participants. Interested residents can sign up in person at either Main Library (2600 Central Blvd) or Southmost Branch (4320 Southmost Rd), or online through the City’s library portal.
