The Cities of Brownsville, Edinburg, and McAllen, are teaming up to introduce the next level of professional development, following the successful turnout of a two-day Introduction to Procurement Essentials training. The Valley cities will collectively launch training sessions titled, “Procurement Readiness and Introduction to Management Essentials™,” starting in the Fall of 2025.
This four-day training course is designed for procurement professionals, including buyers, purchasing agents, contract administrators, department managers, and support staff. Participants will gain practical tools and expert strategies to enhance procurement planning, execution, compliance, and leadership capabilities.
The program schedule and locations are as follows:
- Day 1: October 20, 2025 McAllen
- Day 2: October 21, 2025 Edinburg
- December 1, 2025 Virtual Session
- Days 3 & 4: January 22–23, 2026 Brownsville
The program begins with Day 1: Specification Development, a full-day hands-on workshop in McAllen. It will focus on crafting precise, complete, and competitive procurement specifications that drive effective outcomes.
Day 2, held in Edinburg, participants will explore Developing and Evaluating RFPs and Negotiation Strategies. This full-day session will explore how to structure, issue, and score RFPs effectively and cover best practices for preparing and conducting contract negotiations.
The Virtual Session, scheduled for December 1, 2025, will concentrate on Time Management for Procurement Professionals. This half-day training provides techniques for prioritizing work, managing multiple projects, and keeping procurement timelines on track.
In Brownsville, the training continues with Day 3, starting with a morning Cost and Price Analysis session. Attendees will learn to analyze vendor costs, compare bids, determine fair pricing, and manage price fluctuations using standard indexes. The afternoon session will focus on Construction and Alternate Delivery Methods. It will offer an overview of construction procurement options, guidance on selecting appropriate delivery methods, and insights into key processes and best practices.
Day 4, Contract and Project Management, rounds out the training series with a full day dedicated to managing contracts post-award. Topics include overseeing projects, mitigating risks, evaluating vendor performance, and handling change orders effectively.
