BISD, Region One Expand Early Special Education Services

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Brownsville Independent School District is working with Region One Education Service Center to help children with developmental delays begin special education services as early as age 3.

Families can refer a child to Region One’s Early Childhood Intervention Program without a doctor’s referral. With parental consent, the program can refer a child to BISD about 90 days before the child turns 3 so the district can begin an evaluation.

District evaluations can involve specialists including speech therapists and school psychologists. Children who qualify can receive an individualized education plan based on their needs.

BISD said the evaluations and special education services are free to families, including families whose children are not yet enrolled in the district. The district’s program can be reached at 956-548-8400.
