Brownsville airport expands international access through Aerus and Viva Aerobus partnership

International travel just got easier for Brownsville residents thanks to a new partnership between Aerus Airlines and Viva Aerobus, announced this week at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport.

Aerus Airlines currently operates daily non-stop flights from Brownsville to Monterrey, Mexico. Through this new collaboration, passengers will gain access to 12 additional destinations across Mexico via Viva Aerobus flights out of Monterrey.

The partnership allows travelers to check bags to their final destination and receive boarding passes for connecting flights—making international trips more streamlined and convenient.

Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. celebrated the announcement, noting the local benefit: “More competition means better fares for our residents, and I think that is an excellent thing for our community.”

“Our goal is to make travel seamless and efficient for customers when two airlines work together,” said Jordi Porcel, Director of Alliances for Viva Aerobus.

Brownsville City Manager Helen Ramirez, ICMA-CM, AICP, highlighted the importance of international connectivity:

“To our international partners, you brought the international to our airport. Thank you, Aerus and Viva Aerobus, for being with us. We are one city that is international, and we all have family that is in Mexico.”

The partnership marks another step forward in Brownsville’s efforts to grow as a regional transportation hub and strengthen ties with communities across the border.
