The Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center (BARCC) is encouraging pet owners to protect their pets and community by taking advantage of low-cost rabies vaccine clinics beginning Wednesday, March 25.
The clinics are designed to make essential vaccinations more accessible for residents while helping the city maintain compliance with local health and safety ordinances. Rabies vaccinations are required by city law for pets and play a critical role in preventing the spread of the deadly virus among animals and humans.
Under the City of Brownsville ordinance, all dogs and cats three months of age or older must be vaccinated against rabies. Pets must also receive a booster vaccination one year after their first shot and annually thereafter. Residents who move into Brownsville with pets are required to comply with the ordinance within 30 days of establishing residency.
Each clinic will offer $12 rabies vaccinations, which includes a vaccination certificate and a City license tag. In addition, pets receiving the rabies vaccine will also receive a free microchip, helping improve the chances of reuniting lost pets with their owners.
Due to limited capacity, only a certain number of pets will be seen at each clinic, and residents are encouraged to register in advance by scanning the QR code provided in the event announcement to ensure their pet can be accommodated.
To ensure the safety of all participants, BARCC asks pet owners to follow several guidelines when attending the clinic. Pets must be at least 12 weeks old to receive the vaccine. Cats must be placed in carriers, and dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. The clinic will accept cash payments only.
City officials say the clinics are part of ongoing efforts to promote responsible pet ownership and safeguard public health across the Brownsville community.
Residents interested in participating are encouraged to register early and help keep their pets and the community safe and protected.
