BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Brownsville City Commission approved two water infrastructure projects that could add about 18 million gallons per day of water capacity for the region.
At its Sept. 22 meeting, the commission approved Resolution No. 2026-127, identifying projects benefiting the Brownsville Public Utilities Board and Southmost Regional Water Authority as qualifying projects under the city’s Aug. 29 agreement with SpaceX. The resolution also ratifies an escrow agreement involving the city, PlainsCapital Bank and SpaceX.
BPUB’s potable reuse and wastewater reclamation system is expected to add about 8 million gallons per day of capacity. An expansion of the Southmost Regional Water Authority facility is expected to add about 10 million gallons per day.
Under the agreement, SpaceX can provide up to $220 million for qualifying water and wastewater projects, with funding tied to project milestones. The agreement does not give SpaceX ownership of water infrastructure or reserved capacity in the system.
