Brownsville celebrates “Mardi Paws” with festive fun for dogs and families

Wagging tails, colorful costumes, and festive Mardi Gras spirit filled the air Saturday morning as the Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department hosted its annual “Mardi Paws” celebration at Morningside Park.

The pet-friendly event invited residents and their four-legged companions to take part in a morning of family fun from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., transforming the park into a lively canine carnival.

Sean De Palma, Parks and Recreation Director, said the event was designed to bring the community together while celebrating pets as part of the family.

“This event celebrates Mardi Paws for pets,” De Palma said. “It’s an event that is just enjoyable for families and their canine family members.”

Participants arrived with dogs dressed in festive Mardi Gras-inspired costumes, complete with beads, feathers, and colorful outfits. Activities included a lively dog parade, a 1-mile fun run, and a spirited costume contest, along with other pet-friendly activities throughout the morning.

Held at Morningside Park, located at 1207 S. Central Ave., the celebration brought together pet lovers of all ages for a morning filled with excitement, community spirit, and plenty of puppy pride.

With beads flying and tails wagging, organizers said the event continues to be a favorite community gathering that highlights Brownsville’s commitment to family-friendly recreation and community engagement
