The Brownsville City Commission met this week to address a full agenda, including key decisions on the city’s property tax rate. During the first reading, the Commission voted to maintain the current tax rate of $0.613629 per $100 of assessed valuation. However, this action is not yet final.

A second reading is required by law before the tax rate can be officially adopted. This additional step ensures transparency and allows for further public input or discussion before final approval. The second reading is expected to take place at the September 2nd, Commission Meeting.

The Commission reviewed a Hotel Occupancy Tax Funding for FY 2026, with 17 local organizations recommended for support based on their impact on tourism hotel stays, culture, and preservation. All funding must meet state guidelines and show measurable returns on investments.

During the meeting, the Commission honored Brownsville Fire Department members Captain Aaron Lopes, Fidel Guerrero, and Juan Cerillo for their 20-day deployment assisting with Texas Hill Country flood rescue efforts on July 4, 2025.

The Commission recognized Manuel Alcocer for his more than 40 years of public service, including 21 years on the Airport Advisory Board, where he helped lead the modernization of the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport and the 2020 terminal expansion.

The Commission also issued a proclamation celebrating UTRGV’s 10th anniversary. Since 2015, the university has awarded over 60,000 degrees, launched major academic and medical programs, and is now preparing for its first NCAA Division I football season this fall.

The Special Needs Advisory Board introduced a proposal to establish a new scholarship program to support Brownsville residents with documented disabilities who are pursuing higher education or vocational training. The board requested an annual budget of $2,500 to provide up to two $1,000 scholarships and to fund advocacy initiatives.

In other business, the Commission voted to table a rezoning request concerning proposed residential development along Dennett Road. Commissioners noted the need for continued dialogue with nearby residents who have expressed concerns related to traffic congestion and drainage. Staff confirmed that additional infrastructure improvements are being considered, including a new traffic signal and future road enhancements. Other zoning matters were reviewed and approved.
