City of Brownsville

Meet Your Commissioner

Gustavo De León

City Commissioner, District 3

Gustavo De Leon, City Commissioner for District 3, brings nearly three decades of public service and deep community roots to the City of Brownsville. He was officially introduced during a City Commission Special Meeting on May 13, 2025, and entered office with a commitment to serve residents with transparency, integrity, and collaboration.

A Brownsville native, Commissioner De Leon’s dedication to public service was influenced by strong family values and the legacy of his late father, who previously served as City Commissioner for District 4. Before joining the City Commission, De Leon served 29 years in federal government, including with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Beginning in 1997, he worked as a Supervisor with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, overseeing key operations along the U.S.–Mexico border.

In 2025, De Leon retired from federal service and pursued elected office, encouraged by the support of his wife and family. His decision marked a new chapter in continuing his lifelong commitment to serving the Brownsville community.

As District 3 Commissioner, De Leon focuses on strengthening community partnerships, supporting neighborhood revitalization, and promoting sustainable growth. He believes meaningful progress happens when city leadership and residents work together to build a stronger future for Brownsville.
