Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. has been officially named Chairman of the South Texas Alliance of Cities, a regional coalition of municipal leaders working to address shared challenges and promote coordinated growth across the region.
The announcement came during the alliance’s quarterly meeting, held Thursday in Harlingen, where mayors from across South Texas convened to discuss regional priorities ranging from infrastructure and economic development to public safety and legislative advocacy.
Mayor Cowen’s selection as chairman reflects a growing recognition of Brownsville’s leadership in cross-border trade, space and innovation sectors, and sustainable urban development.
“To me, it’s exciting to build off what Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza and the Alliance have done so far. I think it has provided us with a great platform to showcase South Texas; bring more dollars down here and more investments,” Mayor Cowen said. “I think that is what each of our communities wants, what each one expects from us. I believe we are well-positioned to do that, and we couldn’t have done it without Mayor Garza.”
The South Texas Alliance of Cities serves as a unified voice for the region, aiming to leverage collective influence in Austin and Washington, D.C., while fostering partnerships that benefit the entire South Texas corridor.
Mayor Cowen is expected to lead the alliance’s efforts over the next year, prioritizing legislative alignment, infrastructure investment, and regional economic competitiveness.
