Young artists will have the chance to showcase their creativity and celebrate what makes Brownsville special during the 2026 Arts & Literacy Festival, hosted by the Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department.
In partnership with the Mitte Cultural District, the Department is presenting the Brownsville Story Art Contest, a free competition that invites children and teens ages 5 to 16 to create original artwork inspired by their favorite City of Brownsville parks, trails, recreation programs, or community events.
Whether participants bring a completed painting or drawing from home or create their masterpiece during the event, every piece should tell a unique Brownsville story. All artwork must be an original painting or drawing.
The contest offers more than just bragging rights. First-, second-, and third-place awards will be presented in each age division, and one talented artist will receive the Grand Prize-having their original artwork featured as the official cover of the Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department’s 2026 Fall/Winter Program Guide.
The event will take place on Saturday, July 25, at the Mitte Arts and Cultural Center, 600 E. Ringgold St.
The day’s schedule includes: 9 a.m. registration and pre-made artwork drop-off; 9:30 a.m. live art contest begins; 10:30 a.m. final submission deadline and judging; and 11:30 a.m. awards ceremony.
Registration is free, and families are encouraged to attend and support the young artists as they celebrate creativity, literacy, and community.
