The City of Brownsville proudly kicked off the first community clean-up event under the B.R.I.G.H.T. initiative — Brownsville Residents Improving Grounds, Homes, and Tomorrow — on Friday in District 1, launching a citywide movement focused on neighborhood revitalization and civic pride.

To mark the beginning of this initiative, the City held a press conference at Lincoln Park on University Boulevard, where city officials shared the goals of the BRIGHT program and encouraged community participation.

Residents showed strong support and warmly welcomed volunteers who dedicated their time to cleaning litter, sprucing up green spaces, and enhancing the district’s overall appearance. The event’s positive turnout reflected the community’s deep sense of unity and pride.

“When our neighborhoods are clean, safe, and welcoming, residents feel more connected, more invested, and more proud to call this place home. BRIGHT is not just about beautifying our streets and parks; it’s about strengthening our entire community,” said District 3 City Commissioner Gustavo De Leon.

Organized by the City of Brownsville in collaboration with local partners, the clean-up marked the first of many efforts planned under the BRIGHT banner. Residents in District 1 expressed their gratitude to volunteers and shared their excitement for continued improvements.

“One gentleman came out and said he had not seen anything like this, and he had lived there for 50 years in that house. He was very grateful for the initiative,” said Deputy City Manager Alan Guard.

“When people come to town, how it looks is a first impression — and you know, first impressions make a big difference,” Guard added.

Phase One of the BRIGHT initiative will continue through the end of 2025 and includes a series of targeted neighborhood clean-up events, graffiti abatement programs, and the launch of a new Beautification Watch Program, modeled after traditional neighborhood watch efforts.

The City encourages all residents to participate in upcoming BRIGHT events and join the mission of shaping a cleaner, stronger, and brighter Brownsville.

The next cleanup is scheduled for November 21 in District 4.
