The Brownsville Senior Center on East Madison Street is helping older adults stay active and connected through a variety of free exercise classes designed to promote health, wellness, and social interaction.
During a recent visit to the center, seniors participated in a lively chair Tai Chi session followed by an upbeat drumming workout set to classic favorites like “YMCA” by the Village People and “Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbison. The atmosphere was filled with energy and laughter as participants moved to the rhythm and connected with one another.
The City of Brownsville and the Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department sponsor the classes at no cost to participants, as part of their ongoing commitment to community health and quality of life.
Brownsville resident Xochitl Focil has been attending the City-sponsored senior exercise classes for several years and says they’ve made a meaningful impact on her life.
“They are great. They are a blessing to us because this helps our health and well-being and allows us to socialize—all things recommended for good health,” Focil said. “I really like the classes,” she added, noting that she tries to attend as often as possible.
Gilda Gomez-Lafarga, who teaches the Tai Chi sessions, said she was inspired to offer her services to the City and is grateful for the opportunity.
“It has been a wonderful opportunity and a blessing in my life,” Gomez-Lafarga said. “I love every person, I love the team. It’s like home.”
She noted that class participation continues to grow as more seniors discover the benefits of these engaging and accessible wellness activities.
The Brownsville Senior Center is located at 519 E. Madison Street.
