Friday night lights have a new home, at least for now. Thanks to a collaborative partnership between the City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department and the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD), BISD high school football games are currently being played at the Brownsville Sports Park while renovations take place at the district’s traditional venue.
Traditionally reserved for football, Sams Stadium is being upgraded to accommodate soccer matches, expanding its use as a dual-purpose athletic facility. In the meantime, the Brownsville Sports Park, located at 1000 Sports Park Boulevard, will serve as the primary venue for BISD football games.
“The culture that we have as One City is not just about our internal departments — it includes strong partnerships with organizations like BISD,” said Sean De Palma, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department.
“This collaboration ensures that students don’t miss out on the excitement and tradition of football season, even while their usual stadium is under renovation.”
BISD officials praised the smooth transition and the City’s support in ensuring continuity for student-athletes and their families.
“Thanks to our great relationship with the City of Brownsville, we have the Brownsville Sports Park stepping in during these first weeks while Sams Stadium is being renovated,” said Gilbert Leal, Athletic Director for BISD.
The Brownsville Sports Park will continue to host football games until work at Sams Stadium is complete. The improvements are expected to enhance the student-athlete experience by enabling football and soccer programs to utilize the stadium moving forward.
