BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The City of Brownsville’s Auditor’s Office and Brownsville Police Department are asking residents to stay alert to fraud and scam attempts, including schemes delivered by phone, text message, email and social media.
City officials said scammers may impersonate government agencies, banks or legitimate businesses to gain trust and pressure people to share information or send money. Warning signs can include unexpected payment requests, urgent demands, suspicious links and offers that appear too good to be true.
Residents should not share passwords, banking information, Social Security numbers or verification codes with unknown people. Anyone who receives a suspicious call or message should independently contact the organization involved using a verified number or official website, officials said.
As part of International Fraud Awareness Week, Nov. 15-21, the Auditor’s Office will host fraud-prevention information tables at the Southmost Branch of the Brownsville Public Library System from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 18 and at the Main Branch from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 19.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted is encouraged to report the incident to the Brownsville Police Department and the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
