BROWNSVILLE — City leaders welcomed Saronic Technologies’ Port Alpha groundbreaking Wednesday, Sept. 30, highlighting the shipyard’s expected role in expanding local careers and advanced manufacturing.
Vice President JD Vance joined company leaders and local, state and federal officials at the Port of Brownsville, according to the city’s announcement.
The city described a $3.2 billion project beginning on approximately 835 acres, with room to expand to nearly 4,400 acres. Initial operations are expected in 2028.
Saronic CEO Dino Mavrookas said the company plans to create 10,000 direct shipbuilding jobs over the next decade. These are projected positions, not jobs already filled.
Mayor John Cowen Jr. emphasized partnerships with educational institutions and workforce organizations to prepare residents. City Manager Alan Guard linked the investment to opportunities for families and long-term community development.
Potential careers include welding, engineering, robotics, software, fabrication and advanced manufacturing. The city said it would continue working with regional partners to help residents prepare.
Port Alpha is planned around automation, software and modern production methods to manufacture autonomous and autonomy-capable vessels.
