During its meeting on May 20, the Brownsville City Commission focused on major developments and community recognition. It approved initiatives to expand housing, boost economic growth, and honor local excellence in culture, education, and public service.
The Commission approved the annexation of 8.98 acres along Houston Road for a proposed 41-home single-family residential project, aligning with the city’s efforts to address growing housing demand.
In addition, public hearings were held for rezoning requests on Dennett Road and North Central Avenue to allow for duplex and multifamily housing developments. Community members voiced concerns about traffic congestion, drainage, and sewer infrastructure. In response, city officials tabled both items for further review and community input.
The Commission approved a $400,000 marketing and advertising contract for the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport to support regional travel and economic growth. The campaign aims to increase visibility, attract passengers, and promote the airport through digital media, billboards, and event-based outreach.
The Commission also introduced the first reading of an ordinance to create a Medical Overlay District near Valley Regional Medical Center, designed to encourage regional healthcare innovation and bioscience industry development.
City leaders welcomed Daniel Leal as the new Planning and Redevelopment Services Director.
