City officials and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the Multimodal Transportation East Transfer Station, a $10 million investment in public transit infrastructure located on Jose Colunga Boulevard.

The new facility, operated by BMetro, the largest transit provider in the Rio Grande Valley, supports more than 1.3 million riders annually and represents a major milestone in Brownsville’s ongoing efforts to enhance mobility and accessibility for its residents.

Brownsville City Manager Helen Ramirez, ICMA-CM, AICP, said the East Transfer Station project has been in the works for about 10 years. It was made possible with funding from the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration.

The East Transfer Station improves operational capacity and adds two new routes, increasing connectivity for residents on the city’s east side. The station includes a modern warehouse and an automatic bus wash system, significantly improving efficiency by eliminating employees needing to manually clean buses.

The East Transfer Station is part of the City of Brownsville’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure, supporting economic growth, and delivering high-quality public services across the region.
