BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The City of Brownsville Office of Emergency Management is urging residents to take extra precautions as above-normal temperatures and high heat index values are expected to persist through Saturday and Sunday.
“Please stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activities, and check on family members and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat,” said Odee Ann Leal, Emergency Management Director. “Together, we can keep our community safe during this stretch of hot weather.”
The National Weather Service reports heat index values between 95 and 104 degrees, with the highest risk occurring during peak afternoon hours.
To stay safe, residents are advised to:
- Drink plenty of water – Stay hydrated even if you don’t feel thirsty; avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.
- Avoid peak heat hours – Limit outdoor activity between noon and 6 p.m.
- Wear light, breathable clothing – Choose lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting attire.
- Use air conditioning or visit a cool place – Libraries, malls, and public facilities offer a safe place to cool down.
- Never leave children or pets in vehicles – Interior temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
- Check on vulnerable individuals – Especially the elderly and those with medical conditions.
- Watch for signs of heat illness – Dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, or confusion may require medical attention.
- Limit strenuous activities – Take frequent breaks and rest in the shade if you must be outdoors.
City officials will continue monitoring weather conditions and issue additional updates as needed.
