Pet owners lined up early Saturday morning along Paredes Line Road to receive free dog and cat food, thanks to a donation from the Humane Society of the United States and Chewy, and a coordinated local effort by the Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center (BARCC).
The large-scale giveaway, held at the Brownsville Event Center, drew residents from across the city seeking a helping hand during challenging times. The event was staffed by approximately 40 volunteers, including a strong youth turnout from St. Joseph Academy.
“I am thrilled that we were able to put this together,” said Dr. Antonio Caldwell, Deputy Director of Brownsville Health, Wellness and Animal Services. “We have a community that needs the assistance and support, and we are happy to provide that.”
Dr. Caldwell emphasized that food insecurity among pet owners is one of the top reasons people surrender animals to shelters.
“This helps keep animals out of the shelter,” he said. “When people are struggling to feed their pets, sometimes surrendering them feels like the only option. Giving pet food to the community helps prevent that and also eases the overpopulation challenges we see in shelters.”
Among the volunteers were about 20 students from St. Joseph Academy, including sisters Sarah and Élisa Magallanes, who founded the student-led club Hope for Hounds to promote responsible pet ownership. Their mother, Clara Magallanes, brought them to the event and said she was proud to see the next generation getting involved in animal welfare and civic service.
“I love animals and I hate seeing them abandoned on the street or in need of shelter,” said Sarah Magallanes. “That’s why I wanted to start a club and volunteer with BARCC.”
Her sister Élisa added, “I just wanted to help people who are struggling to care for their dogs or cats. This gives them support and lets them know they’re not alone.”
The event marked another step in BARCC’s ongoing mission to support the community while reducing intake at the city’s animal shelter through education, outreach, and compassionate service.
