BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS — The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) officially launched a transformative new chapter in regional development today with the groundbreaking of the Greater Brownsville Tech District, a 730-acre site dedicated to innovation, advanced manufacturing, and high-quality job creation.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the site along FM511/SH550 between Old Alice Road and Paredes Line Road, where Phase One of the project—nearly 90 shovel-ready acres—is now under development. The Tech District is designed to serve as a clean, high-tech industrial hub, intentionally excluding heavy industry in favor of advanced sectors such as aerospace, precision manufacturing, and global logistics.

GBIC is leading the development of the district, leveraging its strategic location just two miles from Interstate 69, eight miles from the Port of Brownsville, and ten miles from Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport. The site also offers direct rail access, is situated along a heavyweight transportation corridor, and benefits from its inclusion in Foreign Trade Zone #62—all of which enhance its appeal to global and domestic investors.

The district’s proximity to SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch site, just 27 miles away, adds further value, especially for space-adjacent industries and suppliers.

City of Brownsville officials attended the event in support of the project, emphasizing its alignment with the city’s broader vision for sustainable growth. Among them was Mayor John Cowen, who addressed attendees and reinforced the importance of the development as a long-term investment in Brownsville’s future.

Cowen noted that the district represents a powerful symbol of Brownsville’s readiness to compete globally, describing it as a magnet for innovation and industrial opportunity. He highlighted the role the Tech District will play in creating high-quality jobs, attracting advanced industries, and encouraging local talent to build their futures in Brownsville.

As construction begins on Phase One, GBIC is already planning for Phase Two, which is expected to begin in 2026. The organization continues to field strong interest from prospective companies, many of which are looking to establish operations in high-growth sectors.

The Greater Brownsville Tech District represents a bold economic initiative driven by GBIC’s commitment to job creation, innovation, and positioning Brownsville as a premier destination for 21st-century industry.
