LAGUNA VISTA, Texas — Laguna Vista property owners could receive a municipal property tax reduction under a proposal that would lower the town’s rate by 2.5 cents.
The Property Tax Relief Act introduced during the Aug. 19 Town Council meeting would reduce the rate from $0.4541 to $0.4291 per $100 of assessed value, a decrease of approximately 5.5%.
If adopted, the change would reduce town property taxes on a home with an unchanged taxable value of $300,000 by about $75 annually. The town has maintained the current rate for three years and has not increased it since 2023.
Town officials attributed the proposed reduction to budgeting, spending controls and efforts to maintain financial stability. Mayor Mike Carter, Mayor Pro Tem Mike Hernandez and Council Member Teresa Bryant sponsored the proposal.
The council also approved a 3% pay increase for hourly town employees who have worked for Laguna Vista for at least six months.
A public hearing on the proposed tax rate is scheduled for Sept. 8. The reduction will not take effect unless the council completes the required public process and formally adopts the rate.
