Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. was the guest speaker at the BFCC Financial Education Brownsville Independent School District Money Smart Ambassadors Event, which was held Wednesday at the TSC Performing Arts Center on the Texas Southmost College campus.

Mayor Cowen delivered the opening remarks before students from the Homer Hanna, Lopez, Pace, Porter, Simón Rivera, and Veterans Early College High School campuses.

Also in attendance were BISD President Dr. Jesús Chavez and TSC President Jesus Roberto Rodriguez.

Mayor John Cowen Jr. encouraged BISD students to see themselves as future leaders—doctors, engineers, public servants, and even a future mayor—highlighting that real leadership starts with service to others. He connected financial education to community investment, emphasizing that giving back builds lasting wealth for generations.

The mayor celebrated Brownsville’s collaborative spirit through examples like the Gladys Porter Zoo Expansion Project, made possible by a partnership with BISD, and the City’s Parks, Health, and Recreation Master Plan, which is currently seeking public input at btxparksandmotion.com.

Mayor Cowen reminded students that engagement starts now—through school clubs, volunteerism, or joining the City’s Youth Advisory Board.
