McNair Park Reopens With New Equipment After Experiencing Damage

Henry E. McNair Park has officially reopened with brand-new park equipment, including custom-built benches crafted by City of Brownsville staff. The improvements were unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony that welcomed residents back to the revitalized community space.

The park, which suffered fire damage last November, has since undergone a complete repair and restoration thanks to the dedication of city leadership and staff.

“Parks play a vital role in the daily lives of Brownsville residents; they are where children play, families gather, and neighbors come together to build stronger communities,” said Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr.

“The City remains committed to creating and maintaining outdoor recreational spaces for everyone to enjoy. That commitment is reflected in our ongoing City of Brownsville Parks, Health, and Wellness Master Plan. The Master Plan will emphasize accessibility, health, and wellness, ensuring our parks support the physical and mental well-being of all residents,” Mayor Cowen added.

Deputy City Manager Alan Guard echoed the City’s dedication to park restoration and quality of life improvements.

“When the fire struck McNair Park last November, it was a setback for our community. But we knew right away that we would rebuild this park. The City of Brownsville Commission is committed to a world-class parks and trails system, and McNair Park would make its comeback,” Guard said.

“This commitment is backed by action,” he continued. “Just recently, Mayor Cowen and the City Commission approved a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2026, a portion of which ensures continued support for the Parks and Recreation Department and its mission to provide quality spaces where our residents and visitors can take a break from the daily grind. This effort is supported in no small part by our friends at the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation.”

Parks Director Sean De Palma also highlighted the dedication of his team. “Our department averages about 1,900 hours of overtime each month. We do this to ensure that weekends and special events are covered—for you, our community. Serving the residents of Brownsville is always our top priority.”

The Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department currently oversees more than 40 parks and many miles of trails citywide, continuing its mission to make Brownsville a healthier, more connected community.
