BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Investigators have not yet determined what sparked the destructive fire that tore through the Palacio Real Apartments in early December, leaving dozens of Brownsville residents displaced and causing extensive damage to the complex.
Officials with the Brownsville Fire Marshal’s Office said this week that after reviewing physical evidence, witness statements and fire patterns, they were unable to identify a definitive ignition source. As a result, the cause of the fire remains officially classified as undetermined, and the investigation remains open.
The fire broke out the morning of Dec. 7 at the apartment complex, quickly spreading through multiple units. Firefighters arriving at the scene encountered heavy flames and thick smoke, requiring a large response to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.
Authorities said approximately 40 residents were displaced, with more than two dozen apartment units affected. Many tenants lost most or all of their belongings, forcing families to seek temporary housing and assistance.
During the incident, one resident was hospitalized with burn injuries. A firefighter experienced a medical emergency while battling the blaze, and two Brownsville police officers were treated for smoke inhalation. All were later reported to be in stable condition.
In the weeks following the fire, local organizations, city officials and nonprofits mobilized to support affected families. Community donations and fundraising efforts have helped provide temporary housing, food, clothing and other essentials as residents work to rebuild their lives.
Fire officials said that while investigators continue to review information and follow any potential leads, some fires ultimately remain undetermined due to the extent of damage and lack of conclusive evidence.
