SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — The South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary will hold a community celebration Saturday for Big Padre, its largest and oldest alligator, as he turns 59.
The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 22 at the sanctuary, 6801 Padre Blvd. Activities will include educational presentations, an alligator-themed piñata and a public rendition of “Happy Birthday” while Big Padre receives a special meal.
Cake and refreshments will be available while supplies last. The sanctuary said regular general-admission charges will apply.
The celebration gives visitors an opportunity to learn about American alligators and the coastal habitat represented at the nature center. Event details are available through the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce.
