The South Texas Astronomical Society and its Launchpad program will host a public unveiling of Project Vortex, a year-long student rocketry project, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Brownsville Public Library Main Branch.
The free event will give residents and local media an opportunity to see the approximately 12-foot rocket before its scheduled launch in Hearne, Texas, on Saturday, Aug. 8.
Project Vortex brought together Launchpad students from high schools across the Rio Grande Valley to design, build and prepare a high-powered rocket capable of reaching an estimated 10,000 feet.
During the unveiling, students will discuss the rocket’s design and construction, the challenges they encountered and the lessons they learned. Organizers also will share information about the Launchpad program and STEM opportunities.
Event details: Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brownsville Public Library Main Branch. Admission is free and open to the public.
